Census Schedule and Coverage

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts a national population and housing census as of Tuesday night, August 11, 2026. This survey, conducted every five years, counts all people and households residing on that date.

Non-citizens are also required to participate. Visa holders, international students, and overseas visitors are all included, with only diplomats and their families exempted. As of Thursday, August 6, over 1.2 million households had completed the survey, and as of 10 a.m. on the 11th, over 5 million responses had been received.

Completion Methods and Procedures

Respondents must complete the census at their location on census night. Each household completes one form, though individual members may complete separate forms if desired.

Completion is available online via the ABS website or using paper forms received by mail. Those who did not receive a mailed form can call 1800 181 227 to request redelivery or complete it online directly. Online completion requires entering the census number and temporary password received by mail; if unavailable, the census number can be obtained through the website after mobile phone verification.

Those staying at someone else's home are included in that household's form, and those working a night shift are included in their own household's form if returning home the next day. Those staying in accommodation facilities, hospitals, or workplace lodgings must complete individual forms. If no one is home on census night, the ABS must be notified.

Non-Submission Penalties

Participation is a legal obligation. The ABS first encourages non-participants to respond, then sends official legal notices if there is no response. Failure to comply may result in prosecution, with penalties of up to $364 per day.

Providing false information is also subject to penalties. Intentionally making false statements may result in fines of up to $3,640.

Submission is possible after census night, but an ABS spokesperson recommended participation within the deadline. Personal information is protected by law, and other government agencies such as the Department of Home Affairs, Australian Taxation Office, and Centrelink, as well as private companies, cannot access census data.
