10 points for those who do not have spouses or partners - new visa points system
The federal government has introduced a new regional visa and point system for applicants nominated by a state or territory government. According to the Migration Amendment (New Skilled Regional Visas) Regulations 2019, three new visas have been introduced to 'assist regional Australia.' The explanatory statement issued by the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs states, " The amendments introduce a revised points system for the subclass 491 visa as well as existing General Skilled Migration visas. Points are awarded for attributes that are linked with the applicant’s ability to make the greatest economic contribution, as the key purpose of the skilled migration program is to maximise the economic benefits of migration to Australia." The level of immigration to Australia had the centre stage for the better part of the last year with the Government announcing some of the most significant changes seen in the recent years, including slashing the permanent intake for the first time in nearly a decade. Some of the most significant changes to Australia's immigration system in recent years are going to take effect this year. Immigration cap lowered Following months of posturing on the issue of growing congestion in Sydney and Melbourne, the Federal Government announced in March this year that it will cut back Australia's annual permanent immigration intake to 160,000. The intake has been capped at 190,000 since 2011 but the actual intake fell to just over 162,000 in 2017-18 for the first time in over a decade. The impact of the overall cut will be absorbed by Skilled Independent visas that allowed people to live and work anywhere in Australia. New changes introduced to NSW skilled visa nomination program
New South Wales has introduced changes to their Skilled nominated (190) program for 2019-20. ‘Good news for Chefs, cooks and motor mechanics’ but closes the door to candidates of certain occupations who don't live in the state, says migration expert. The new migration program year kicked in from July 1, 2019, and one of the most sought after Australian state for migration purpose, New South Wales has introduced new changes to their skilled nominated (190) program for 2019-20. Subclass 190 visa is a permanent residency visa for which one must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency. For New South Wales, applicants for certain occupations will now have to fulfil additional requirements like living and being employed in NSW. Third Working Holiday Maker visa program to start on 1 July 2019
Eligibility for working holiday visas has increased to 35 years of age for Canadian and Irish applicants, while negotiations to increase the limit for other countries are continuing. An undisclosed number of countries are negotiating with the Australian government on the possibility of increasing the eligible age limit for working holiday visas, after it was announced that a similar deal was reached with Canada and Ireland. "Reciprocity is a key feature of the program, enabling eligible young people from Australia to also work and holiday in partner countries," a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) spokesperson told SBS Italian. "The department is in negotiations with other countries regarding the age increase and further details will be announced in due course." SBS Italian can confirm that Italy is among those countries. The data, released on Wednesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, showed that of the 7 million migrants living in Australia last year, 992,000 were born in England - 4 per cent of the total Australian population. The next closest country was China with 651,000 migrants living in Australia, or comprising 2.6 per cent of the population. How the government plans to boost regions
HOW IS THE GOVERNMENT LURING MIGRANTS TO THE REGIONS? There will be 23,000 extra regional visa spots, which require skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia for three years before they can apply for permanent residency. The employer-nominated stream of the visa will have 9000 places, while the state and territory-nominated scheme will have 14,000 spots. The government is using permanent residency as the bait to ensure skilled workers stay in regional Australia, with a 99 per cent compliance rate in an existing scheme. Workers will be able to move around regional Australia, but can't settle in major cities. The government is putting $7 million towards compliance, ensuring people abide by the rules. WHAT ABOUT STUDENTS? Across four years, a total of 4720 Australian and international students will be able to vie for $15,000 scholarships to study in regional areas. International students studying at regional universities will also get an extra year in Australia on a post-study work visa. Five important immigration changes in Australia in 2019
1. Longer processing times for partner visa. Partner visas take longer to process. Because the Family Violence Bill passed in the Senate last November, partner visa sponsorships need to be approved first before applications are lodged. Migrant students 'outperforming Australian-born classmates'
A new OECD report has found migrant children have the academic edge in Australia. Migrant children, particularly those from India, China and the Philippines, are achieving better academic results than their Australian-born classmates, according to a new OECD report. The Resilience of Students with an Immigrant Background report also showed students who've recently settled into the country have more ambitious career aspirations and a strong sense of belonging at school. Yousif Barbo, who recently settled in Sydney after coming from Iraq with his parents, is one such student.
